Climate Neutral Starting in 2022: The Vorwerk Group Speeds Up Climate Protection Efforts

Wuppertal, November 24, 2021 – Starting in 2022, operations at all Vorwerk Group sites will be climate neutral in terms of their own carbon emissions. As a result, the Wuppertal-based family company will reach an important milestone in its future strategy. In its Sustainability Report 2020 now out, the Group cites further successes as well as setting itself some ambitious goals for the coming years.

Starting in 2022, Vorwerk Group operations will be climate neutral in terms of their own carbon emissions (Scope 1 and 2). To achieve this, the company will be using a mix of carbon reduction and carbon offsetting. The central focus is on carbon reduction: Vorwerk is cutting its greenhouse gas emissions by switching to green energy at its production and administration sites, by including electric vehicles in its fleet of company cars, and by improving its production efficiency. As a result, greenhouse gas emissions are currently 52 percent lower than in the base year, 2016. Overall, by 2025 Vorwerk aims to have cut its own carbon emissions by 66 percent. In an effort to achieve overall climate neutrality, the company is offsetting the remaining emissions it cannot eradicate with accepted compensatory measures.

“Sustainability and taking the long view have been the principles by which Vorwerk has operated ever since its foundation in 1883. What’s more, to keep the world our home worth living in for coming generations, we are work constantly to improve the impact of our business on the environment and to make a positive contribution to sustainable development in the spirit of international climate-protection goals,” says Dr. Thomas Stoffmehl, Speaker of the Executive Board and Chief Sales Officer of the Vorwerk Group. “By achieving climate neutrality in 2022 and further reducing our emissions by 2025, we are taking yet another step in the right direction.”

In its second sustainability report, the family company reviews its performance in 2019 and 2020 and reports further progress, among other things, in energy and material efficiency. For instance, it significantly exceeded the target set in 2016 to reduce energy consumption per ton of electrical appliances manufactured from 3.5 to 1.9 megawatt hours by actually bringing consumption down to 1.1 megawatt hours. In addition to this, the quantity of plastic packaging rose by only 2.7 percent despite production volume being up 11.8 percent in 2020.

Besides the ecological and economic pillars of sustainability, the social pillar is of prime importance to the Vorwerk family company. In 2020, a year defined by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Vorwerk companies around the world supported local charitable projects, chiefly by making financial and material donations to those particularly affected by the pandemic.
